Why the VA Is Alerting Veterans
The VA recently warned veterans about fraudulent “Veterans Savings Program” postcards appearing in several states. Those postcards were not sent by the VA and may have attempted to collect veterans’ personal or financial information.
Because of those warnings, some veterans may understandably assume that any unexpected postcard mentioning VA benefits is fraudulent.
The new “Choose VA” postcard is different: it is an official communication sent directly by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
What To Do if You Receive a Postcard
Receiving a postcard does not automatically enroll you in VA health care. It provides information about checking your eligibility and submitting an application.
Veterans can apply through any of the following official methods:
- Online: Visit the official VA health care application
- By phone: Call the VA Health Eligibility Center at 877-222-8387
- In person: Use the VA facility locator to find a nearby VA location
You do not need to wait for a postcard to apply.
Protect Yourself From Veteran Benefit Scams
Scammers often make communications appear official or pressure recipients to act quickly. Before providing personal information, always verify that you are dealing with the VA.
Keep these precautions in mind:
- Confirm that website addresses end in VA.gov
- Check where a QR code leads before opening the page
- Do not provide financial information in response to an unverified postcard, email, text message or phone call
- Be cautious of messages demanding immediate action or payment
- When uncertain, visit VA.gov directly instead of following an unfamiliar link
