Construction Project Engineer Intern
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Construction Project Engineer within the Capital Programs Management (CPM), Core Services Directorate, to support the overall portfolio of projects designed via Infrastructure Planning, Design & Construction (IPD&C) managed on-call design contracts.The Construction Project Engineer Intern is responsible for supporting IPD&C and the Chief of Construction Management in the planning and coordination of moderately complex capital projects from scope initiation through construction. Primarily, this position will be responsible for the tracking, monitoring, and execution of task orders issued under on-call construction management contracts. - Review consultant designs and ensure that construction adheres to specs and plans.- Participate in field surveys and inspections - Notify Supervisor(s) of any adverse conditions- Monitor work in progress by contractors and report all hazardous conditions- Assist with formulation of punch lists and contractors completion of punch list items- Assist with EH&S 1910 inspections and the resolution of any issues cited.- Schedule and run meetings, both onsite and virtual- Maintain contract files and written records of job history and progress.- Coordinate resolution of contractor inquiries.- Write in a concise and organized manner- Analyze and presents data, as compared to contract specification, schedule and budget constraints. - Display understanding of technical content and scope- Interface with others in a professional manner.Competencies:- Analytical Ability- Communication Skills- Interpersonal Skills- Time Management- File management system capable of supporting legal documentation regarding contract disputes- Critical ThinkingRecords and Reports:- Daily and Weekly status updates- eBuilder workflow and file storage- Monthly contract invoicesLicense Requirement:At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. Employees must maintain this license for the duration of employment.Health and Safety Working Conditions:Some of the physical activities performed by Civil Engineering Interns are: walking to and from inspection sites and during the course of inspections; climbing and descending ladders or stairs to get to areas to be inspected; standing on scaffolds to inspect work; standing for an extended period of time; bending and stooping during inspections; working in confined areas; distinguishing colors; wearing a hard hat; climbing over and around various objects; walking in areas that may be damp, dark smoky or acrid; working outdoors in all kinds of weather; must be able to lift about 20 pounds of equipment when required.Special Working Conditions: Civil Engineer Interns may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.Preferred Skills:- MS office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - Familiarity with AutoCAD- Reason logically, focus on objectives, and follow supervisor directives- Ability to think logically, focus on objectives, and follow supervisor directives- Capacity to track and manage multiple contracts- Able to travel, as necessary, to other BWS locations throughout the watershed Work Location:465 Columbus AveValhalla, NY 10595Valhalla is a hamlet in the Town of Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, NY approximately 28 miles from mid-town Manhattan.
Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A degree in any other engineering area or in civil engineering technology is not acceptable.
