About the Position: As Chief of the Welding and Metallurgy Technical Center of Expertise Section, assumes responsibility for the accomplishment of work related to welding and metallurgy assigned to the Welding and Metallurgy Technical Center of Expertise (WM-TCX) located in Portland District, Engineering Division, Design Branch.


  • Assign projects to staff and communicate with Districts to determine design requirements.
  • Manage, plan, coordinate, and resource a wide range of welding and metallurgy projects.
  • Ensure the technical adequacy and design quality of all work performed by the team.
  • Mentor and provide training for the professional development of junior personnel.
  • Develop and prepare new technical guidance, design criteria, and standard drawings.
  • Act as a special technical advisor and represent the District in conferences and on special studies.
  • Coordinate and instruct technical workshops and training courses.
  • Supervise a staff of engineers and quality assurance personnel.
  • Manage staff performance, including reviews, appraisals, and corrective actions.
  • Handle personnel administration tasks such as approving leave and certifying time and attendance.

Minimum Qualifications: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in federal service with the design of structural and/or mechanical engineering features associated with construction projects for navigation, flood control, bridge safety, hydraulic steel structures (HSS), hydroelectric and/or vertical construction projects.
