Senior Scientist - Garcia Lab

The Joe GN "Skip" Garcia laboratory is seeking a motivated Senior Scientist at The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology in Jupiter, Florida, to join our laboratory doing high level research. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced laboratory, on various projects pertaining to acute respiratory distress syndrome, inflammation biology, lung disease and much more, and will gain additional experience and skills during their tenure in the lab. This individual will have extensive experience in biological and laboratory sciences, who is hard working and has a desire to work as a team. The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute advances human health through biomedical research, drug discovery and clinical studies, while providing outstanding educational opportunities to inspire and train the next generation of scientists. In addition, the Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Scripps Research trains the next generation of scientists on our campus through its nationally recognized Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences.


The laboratory of Dr. Joe GN "Skip" Garcia is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Scientist to join its high-powered translational research team which is focused on the science of inflammation. The position will perform various tasks designed to support the impactful research of the lab including multi-dimensional experiments and assays. The ideal candidate will work independently and within the research team with significant experience and judgment to plan and accomplish defined goals in a given research project. The candidate will have a wide degree of creativity and latitude and is expected to be very familiar with a variety of the laboratory’s concepts, practices, and procedures. 



  • Implement existing methodologies using cell culture work, FACS, gDNA and RNA isolation for NGS analysis. Will also do Antigen assays, and analysis.

  • In vivo and in-vitro work, assay development.

  • Measurements of cytokines and other biomarkers utilizing MSD Platform or standard ELISAs with expertise in data quantification.

  • Collect and/or process specimens; examine specimens under microscope, prepare collections of preserved specimens or microscopic slides for species identification and study of development or disease.

  • Analyze datasets for clinical or research purposes; evaluate data by performing appropriate mathematical or statistical calculations and analyses.

  • Develop new methods to study the mechanisms of biological processes; develop guidelines for procedures.

  • Prepare collections of preserved specimens or microscopic slides for species identification and study of development or disease.

  • Collaborate/consult with researchers and other professionals to conduct appropriate analyses, analyze problems, determine strategies, or recommend solutions.

  • Develop protocols to improve existing techniques or to incorporate new diagnostic procedures; search scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures most appropriate for research goals.

  • Design laboratory experiments; oversee their execution; and review, approve, or interpret results.

  • Attend monthly laboratory meetings and present your work and findings.

  • Prepare data for meetings and publications.

  • Literature searches and publication searches.

  • Procedures.

  • Direct the work of other scientists, technicians, and other workers and evaluate the accuracy of their results; teach or advise undergraduate or graduate students or supervise their research.

  • Provide routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; verify that equipment and instrumentation are maintained in working condition to ensure accuracy and quality of experimental results.

  • Test new and updated tools and software.

  • Other duties as assigned.


EXPECTED SALARY: 


$60,000 – $85,000 annually, depending on experience. 


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 


Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Excellent problem solving and organization skills. 

  • Proficient oral and written communication

  • Ability to efficiently perform a variety of biochemical and molecular assays including ELISAs, Mesoscale, PCRs, protein assays, Western Blots and immunoprecipitation.
